Hi Gridiron fans!
My Name is Chris Mooney, I have been playing Gridiron here in Australia since 1994 in the Queensland competition. As Andy mentioned I will be bringing you updates from around the country from each of our member states covering the histories of teams, player profiles, and news from Aussies playing Gridiron abroad. But for the next 4-5 weeks it’s all about the National Championships!
It comes around every two years, the Gridiron Australia National Championship Tournament! This time we are headed to Melbourne April 9th-17th where 6 states will be represented on the field by the best American football talent currently in Australia.
Reigning National Champs NSW Wolfpack will look to continue their winning streak of 4 consecutive titles however it will not come easy with South Australia Swarm, Western Australia Raiders, Victorian Eagles, ACT Monarchs and of course my team the QLD Sundevils all looking to knock the champs off their throne. Gridiron fans in Melbourne that make it out to any of the clashes during the week long tournament can expect to see some exciting games especially with places on the Australian team ‘The Outback’ up for grabs.
Recently the Outback traveled to the UK and played 3 games over 2 weeks against a combined university team, the Great Britain Lions and the Sweden National side recording 2 wins and losing a tough battle against current European champs Sweden. The winning performance put on by the Aussies certainly sent shock waves through the Gridiron community in the UK and will ensure Australia is taken seriously when we compete in the Gridiron World Cup to be held in Austria mid 2011.
Stay tuned as I take you around the different State’s in the coming weeks and get a wrap up of their Nationals preparation and catch up on what’s happening in the Gridiron community across the country.
See you on the field!
Mooney .
