href="http://nfldownunder.com/tag/drew-brees" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with Drew Brees">Drew Brees Frustrated With Lack Of Contract Talks

After all the Saints have been through this offseason, the one thing they could rely on was that they would still have a high powered offence. But Drew Brees is getting frustrated with the lack of progression towards getting a long term deal done.

The former Super Bowl MVP believes that despite his agent reaching out to kickstart negotiations, the Saints have been doing nothing to help them move along. The Saints owner, Tom Benson, claimed in April that both sides were close to an agreement, however Brees says that nothing has been offered remotely close to a contract he would sign.

Brees can’t change teams, because the Saints issued him the franchise tag, stopping him from entering free agency, but Brees hasn’t signed the franchise tender yet and a contract dispute could add more turmoil to an already chaotic offseason for the Saints.

There are so many things you can do on a football field with so many different scenarios: D&D, where you are on the field, what personnel you have on the field, where they line up, bunch alignments, stack alignments, run, pass, draw, screen, play action, blitz, zone coverage, man coverage, man/zone coverage, zone blitz, max coverage, 1 Safety high, 2 Safeties high, 0 Safeties high, stunt, drop defensive linemen in coverage and each in a lot of different ways.

It’s very difficult to see everything that happens during a play. That’s why the coaches watch a lot of game film to prepare – to help gain a good understanding of what the opponent could do making the plays easier to recognize.

That said, perhaps the Steelers didn’t show this play before Super Bowl XLIII. Clearly the Cardinals didn’t see it coming.

The Situation

The Cardinals have the ball on the 3-yard line, right hash, 1st and goal, 2nd quarter, 18 seconds on the clock. Arizona trails the Steelers by three points, 10-7. The Cardinals have their Ace personnel package on the field. 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 RB. WR #11 Larry Fitzgerald and WR #81 Anquan Boldin are in a “close” alignment (this means they are next to each other and “close” to the LT). QB #13 Warner is in the Shotgun and RB #34 Tim Hightower in a position to the left of the QB.

From the +3 yard line you will regularly see the offense put in their Heavy personnel grouping in early downs, as pictured below:

In this case however the Cardinals stay with their Ace grouping. In the picture below we can see both sides just before the snap.

The Steelers have their Base personnel on the field, 3 DL, 4 LB and 4 DB. The Steelers “show” blitz with all their Linebackers in position to rush the QB. Zone and Man pressure is what the Steelers are known for and they do it from all angles with a lot of different players rushing the QB.

The Result

At the snap of the ball, the Steelers rush with their three DL and two LB. #92 Harrison takes a step up field like he is rushing the QB but then drops in coverage. #94 Lawrence Timmons rushes through the “B” gap and the left guard has a really hard time trying to block him, as such he puts a lot of pressure on Warner.

The “Close” alignment from Boldin and Fitzgerald usually present a problem for the defense. In man-to-man coverage it is best to stagger the depth of the DB’s so they can’t get picked off. In this case the DB’s are basically on the same level and in an “outside leverage” position. As the receivers release you see that Fitzgerald pushes up the field and Boldin comes underneath him to the inside. They try to pick the outside defender so he cannot defend the Slant route. Warner, under pressure, gets rid of the ball quick and throws it straight into the arms of Harrison who dropped in coverage to help the DB’s on the inside routes.

The run after the interception is impressive but to me it is all about the scheme before Harrison caught the ball. It was a great play and a 14-point swing before going into half time. It would have been great to be in that locker room .

It was a great offensive call by the Cardinals, but an even better call by the defensive guru Dick Lebeau!

AFC potential breakout stars. This is not due to his on field production or catchy name, but rather the fact that he was taken 9th overall ahead of notable pro bowlers Earl Thomas, Jason Pierre-Paul and Ryan Matthews.

So far, Spiller has shown flashes but not lived up to the hype in terms of production.

This could change this upcoming season due to various reasons.

Buffalo had made it clear over the off season that defence was first priority.

They achieved this with the free agent signings of defensive ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson to pair with defensive tackles Marcel Dareus and Kyle Williams, as well as drafting shutdown corner Stephon Gilmore with the 10th overall pick.

This will work in Spiller’s favour as the Bills can now play ball control football instead of having to engage in a shootout due to a poor defence.

While it may be questionable to label a backup running back a breakout candidate, the truth of the matter is Fred Jackson is on the wrong side of 30 for a running back, and is returning from a broken leg.

There are questions as to whether he will be able to regain the form he had, and whether his body can withstand the punishment of being an every down back at the age of 31.

For these reasons I see Spiller being a viable option to become the number one running back sooner rather than later.

Projection: 1,100 rush yards, 6 touchdowns, 410 receiving yards, 3 receiving touchdowns.

<hr

However, with the Draft officially out of the way and still a few months to kill, we realise that there are those of you out there who will start stiff-arming old ladies at the Supermarket for the last can of Dr Pepper if you don’t get a of football hit pretty soon.

In the interest of public safety then here is a list of ’5 Pre-Season NFL Alternatives: The Pros and Cons’ to help you through this difficult time.

5. The Arena Football League

It looks like football, sounds like football….but brother, it ain’t football.

Arena football, which was actually invented way back in 1981 (not in the cult movie Starship Troopers as some would believe), is a modified version of regular football played between teams of eight in turfed indoor arenas. The games are fast and hectic, with the biggest indoor league, the AFL, running between March and July each year.

Despite running in the NFL offseason arena football has had a history over the years that makes Pac-Man Jones’ look like smooth sailing, with a number of franchises and competitions coming and going. It is still very much viewed as a bit of laugh by hardcore football fans, and is perhaps best viewed as just a God-Damn football snack by NFL worshippers.

Pros: Fast paced, plenty of touchdowns for the fans and a good nursery for late blooming talent ala Kurt Warner.

Cons: There’s a chance things might become repetitive after the thirtieth touchdown, and any league where a one-legged Terrell Owens dominates is something to be wary of.

4. The Lingerie Football League

Similar in many ways to arena football, the Lingerie Football League (LFL) is a modified version of American football played in indoor arenas on shrunken fields. Played by, err, women in their underwear.

Making the transition from Supr Bowl half-time entertainment option to full on league in 2009, the LFL sees two teams of seven battle it out for a place in the end of season Lingerie Bowl, all the whilst avoiding wardrobe malfunctions and randy frat boys. Whilst previously running alongside the NFL calendar, the next season of the LFL is set to start in April 2013 to mirror other indoor football leagues.

What will the LFL’s athletic female warriors be doing in the meantime you ask? Ohh, only taking over the world, with exhibition games in Mexico, Canada and….Australia!

Pros: A chance to see some top-level female athletes display their talents in a rock-em, sock-em high intensity sporting experience,

Cons: Try selling the above to your better half.

3. The Canadian Football League

Ahhh good old Canadian football, a sure sign that the NFL is not too far away. With its season beginning in June, the CFL is a great way to get your football fix in a competition with an amazing history and fan base until the NFL regular season begins.

Hang on a second though, what’s that extra bloke doing on the field? Why is the punter coming on at 3rd down? And why the hell can I only find eight teams for my fantasy squad?

Yep, they do things a little bit differently in Canada, with a host of subtle rule changes and field dimensions just enough to confuse the beejesus out of anyone without a maple leaf tattoo.

Still, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson used to play, so that’s good enough for me!

Pros: One less down makes for some great passing plays and the ‘rouge’ law certainly adds another element to the game.

Cons: The end-zones are the size of an entire arena league field and would make Curtis Painter look like a Hall of Fame quarterback.

2. Madden NFL

Arguably the greatest time-killer ever invented, at least one Madden video game is a must in any true NFL fan’s household. With a level of depth and sophistication that makes all other sports sims look like California Games for the Atari 2600, Madden is one NFL alternative that you can’t but help get excited about.

That is, unless of course you happen to be the poor cursed bloke who gets put on the cover each year.

Nice knowing you Megatron.

Pros: Ultra realistic, oodles of fun and the closest you’ll ever get to putting a big shot on Tim Tebow.

Cons: More addictive than cocaine laced ice-cream and not recommended for anyone studying or trying to hold down any semi-important job. Or relationship for that matter.

1. Football Movies

Americans sure do love their sport, and everyone knows they love their cinema-put the two together and BOOM! You’ve got….well, some mixed results really.

The first football movie was made in 1925 and Hollywood has been churning them out ever since. More often than not they are great money spinners for studios at the box office, however at times they are let down by some optimistic casting. I.e., Could any real football fan believe that the metalhead slacker from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure could play quarterback for a professional franchise? Totally bogus dude!

On the other hand though football movies have given us some of film’s greatest single moments ( I still get a bit misty eyed at the end of Rudy), so I guess you just have to take the bad with the good on this one.

Beats watching the latest Chad Ochocinco reality show anyway.

Pros: When done properly can be hugely entertaining, though provoking and downright inspiring

Cons: For every Remember the Titans or Friday Night Lights there is some piece of utter, utter drivel released like, say The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphie Phenomenon.

Yes, that movie does actually exist.

This Week In The NFL: Vikings Future In Minnesota

News

Adrian Peterson

Christian Ponder

Cincinnati Bengals

Cris Carter

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacob Bell

Jared Allen

Louis Rams

Minnesota Vikings

New Orleans Saints

Referees

St

Tennessee Titans

This Week In The NFL

Minnesota Vikings look like they will get a new stadium after all. All that remains is for the Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton to sign off on the bill, which passed through the senate today.

Under the proposed plan, the Vikings will fork out 49 percent of the $975 million required to build the stadium, meaning that the State of Minnesota has to chip in $348 million, while the city must put in $150 million.

The stadium plans had appeared dead in the water multiple times and with the proposed stadium in LA hanging over the whole situation,
Former Viking Admits To Placing Bounties On Players

Former Viking receiver and EPSN analyst Cris Carter admitted to using bounties during his playing career. Carter said “I put bounties on guys. If a guy tries to take me out, a guy takes a cheap shot on me? I put a bounty on him right now!”

Carter later went on to clarify his comments, claiming the bounties were used for defence. He used the example of a time when former LB Bill Romanowski came up to him in pre-game warmups and threatened to end his career. Carter said after that he put a bounty on his head to protect himself and his family.

The comments came a day after the players suspended in the
Refs The Next To Be Locked Out?

It turns out the players are not the only people who can get locked out of the NFL. The CBA between the referees and the NFL is due to expire at the end of May and not much work has been done to resolve the issues.

Should both sides fail to reach an agreement, the NFL would considering locking out the officials. If the work stoppage isn’t resolved in time, the NFL would consider hiring current and former college officials who are qualified to work professional games.

This wouldn’t be the first time the league had to find replacement officials. In 2001, replacements were used for one preseason and one regular season game.
<hr

It was a reasonable, even unsurprising comment from a Super Bowl winning QB whose career should be an inspiration for athletes and regular joes alike. Of course he suffered criticism for it from fellow ex-NFL players as well as <a

It’s about the changing nature of the game and those who would rather it didn’t.

With the league finally taking a hard line against potentially harmful play, particularily with regards to reducing concussions, these ‘fans’ are finding more and more excuses to spew their practised, illogical bullshit.

Allow me to site an example:

User name has been removed.

This comment, from NFL.com, is a sound example of the daily crap I see online whenever there is NFL injury-related news. It has some basic elements that most comments of this type feature. Allow me to elaborate.

“Without Football these bums would be packing groceries or pumping gas!”

Uh, no. The vast majority of NFL players are college graduates and while it’s often in something like ‘Sport Science’ or Communications (such as Kurt Warner himself, who graduated from the University of Northern Iowa) they are in no way indebted to the game to such an extent that they would be lost souls without it.

They love it, are thankful for it, cannot imagine life without it, but don’t rely on it to live a good life. If they are pure athletes, not really academic bastions, that’s fine too. There are plenty of other sports they could make a living out of, some that even feature a complete absence of head trauma.

“Without the NFL these players would be on the street, stealing my hubcaps!”

Now admittedly I haven’t double checked these numbers, but I am fairly sure that 99.99% of crime in the US is not committed by potential NFL players.

I really shouldn’t have to explain this, but suggesting that if there was no football these kids would be career criminals or dead/imprisoned by the age of 20 is extraordinarily stupid. Oh, and most likely racist too. Sure, we hear of players being arrested for stupid shit they do all the time – Hi Mr. Leaf! – but it’s not a very large number, at all. We simply hear about NFL player crimes because Pro Football Talk dedicates an entire section to it and sports media generally considers it newsworthy.

This also ties into my earlier point that these players are somehow indebted to the game because they would be locked up or dead if they didn’t have it. They’re not. Clearly, players are just as likely to resort to crime as anybody else. Crime is not the natural backup career choice for the NFL athlete.

“An argument could be made that the risks are worth it!”

Note that most won’t explicitly state that the player should expect head injuries as par for the course for playing at the NFL level. But they’ll slyly suggest that an argument could be made.
<div

They’re not gladiators, they’re athletes. The reason why the NFL is in such a hurry to make the game safer is because until recently nobody knew exactly what the long term risks were. That’s one of the reasons why there’s currently a 1600+ strong lawsuit being aimed at the NFL by ex-pro football veterans.

Worth it? I’m not sure any intelligent human being could ever argue that a game that may eventually lead you to pointing a pistol at your own chest and pulling the trigger (as, tragically Junior Seau did last week) is worth it.

Allow me to reel off some common effects from those who experienced multiple concussions: depression, memory loss, mental dullness, fatigue, headaches and mood swings. I don’t know about you, but I personally believe there would be nothing worse than losing my mind like this. The game can literally turn you into a different person, make you a stranger to yourself, your friends and your family. Worth it? Respectfully, sir, nothing is worth that.

Let’s dispel any notions that these kinds of hits (the unsafe, head-to-head hits that the NFL is trying to wipe out) don’t cause this kind of damage. The last NFL player to die under similar conditions was ex-Bears star Dave Duerson – strikingly similar, he also shot himself in the chest. He actually <a

It’s likely – but not certain – that Seau will be found to have suffered the same condition.

If somebody came up and offered you one million dollars in return for the right to make you almost brain-dead, antisocial and suicidal at the age of 50, would you do it?

Hardcore NFL fans probably shouldn’t answer that.

“They’re ruining the game, it’s sissification*!”

Here’s what it comes down to: selfishness or ignorance. These ‘fans’ spouting this trash are scrambling, desperately groping in the dark and shouting out loud because they are either too ignorant or selfish to see and admit that while the game is changing, it’s for the best. They refuse to understand that players (like Warner and <a

They remain captive by an outdated culture, a faint memory of an NFL that in reality never was, and will act out like petty children if their reasons for enjoying the game – reasons devoid of any genuine attention to the game itself or love of it – are at all threatened.

Even worse, the fans believe the players, somehow, owe it to the fans to play the game they want them to play. As if the years of dedication, suffering and sacrifice hasn’t earned them the right to ask “Wait, am I going to suffer permanent brain damage if I play this sport for a long time?” and ask that changes be made and responsibility be taken.

That’s their right, and the NFL’s responsibility.

Yet still, I see these arguments thrown about constantly and they make me groan every time I see them.

If <a

Let’s look at five players who, for various reasons, are going to be under the greatest pressure to perform in 2012.

Mark Sanchez, QB, New York Jets

A lack of other viable quarterback options behind Sanchez has meant there was little, if any, pressure to keep his starting position and a relatively competition-free three seasons. The Jets even went so far as to give Sanchez a new five year, $58.25 million contract to make him feel more comfortable, despite his two remaining years on his rookie contract.

And now the same two words that were the bane of John Elway’s existence last year will be the shadow hanging over the shoulder of Mark Sanchez this season. Tim Tebow.

When the Jets signed Tebow after he was released by Denver, New York got something it hadn’t had in the Mark Sanchez era – competition at quarterback. Say what you will about his deficiencies, there are two inescapable facts about Tebow – he is a winner and he has a vocal, ravenous fan base that believes he is capable of being a starting quarterback.

In the first few weeks of the season Sanchez needs to win – and win well – in order to lure over the locker room and hush the pro-Tebow brigade. If he begins the season with a series of poor performances, the cries for Tebow will get louder and louder. Just ask Kyle Orton what happens next.

Kevin Kolb, QB, Arizona Cardinals

Arizona acquired Kolb in a trade from the Eagles last offseason in the hope he would be their franchise quarterback. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Kolb had a disappointing 2011 season that was characterised by poor decision making and injuries. Kolb only started nine games last year and threw a disappointing nine touchdowns.

Arizona already had one of the best receivers in the game on their roster in Larry Fitzgerald. By drafting Michael Floyd in the first round, Arizona has now given Kolb two great receiving weapons to work with. This, coupled with the fact that the Cardinals spent three of their draft picks shoring up their offensive live, shows the franchise is attempting to give Kolb every chance to succeed.

Kolb is quickly running out of time to prove he can be a stable quarterback. If he fails again this season Arizona will be looking for their next quarterback.

Chris Johnson, RB, Tennessee Titans

Chris Johnson had the worst season of his career last year. It was terrible timing for the Titan as he had just signed a new $53.50 million contract extension after holding out and demanding a new contract during the preseason. The drastic drop in performance had many likening Johnson to former Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander who famously earned himself a massive contract prior to the 2006 season, then ended up out of the league by 2008.

Johnson will be looking to distance himself from the Shaun Alexander comparisons via a massive 2012. Even though the Titans failed to address the poor run blocking of the offensive line through the draft, Johnson will be helped by duel receiving threat offered by Kenny Britt and new wideout Kendall Wright. This should reduce the number of eight-man fronts Johnson will face.

I have no doubt CJ2K can come through this rough patch and return to the stellar form he produced earlier in his career. I’m just wary of how much patience owner Bud Adams will have if Johnson turns in another sub-par season.

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers

Crabtree has been one of the bigger disappointments for the 49ers over the past three seasons. San Francisco thought it found the number one receiver it’d been desperately chasing when Crabtree fell to them at the 10th pick of the 2009 draft after he was overlooked by the Oakland Raiders. His performances to date have not matched the hype that followed him out of Texas Tech.

Crabtree’s receiving yards have gradually increased each year but he has yet to record a 1,000 yard season and he has only recorded 12 touchdowns. Even though San Francisco’s run-heavy offense isn’t conducive to receivers putting up massive numbers, they would’ve been hoping for Crabtree to make more of an impression than he has.

The 49ers indicated they weren’t happy with his progress when they acquired Randy Moss and Mario Manningham in free agency, then used their first round pick to draft Illinois wide receiver A.J. Jenkins. If these moves don’t stoke the fire in Crabtree’s belly I don’t know what will. It’s now or never for #15.

Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

The reason Brees is in this list has absolutely nothing to do with his play. He is a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl MVP, and holds the NFL record for most passing yards in a season. Brees’ position in the team is safe as a bank. But he will still be under immense pressure this year because of the storm that is raging off the field.

New Orleans is enduring what could possibly be the worst offseason in the history of the NFL. The Saints are currently embroiled in the ‘Bountygate’ scandal and it is taking a massive toll on the team. Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for a year, several players have also received suspensions, their interim coach has been suspended for part of the season and will be replaced by another coach, and their Super Bowl XLIV victory has been tarnished.

With all the chaos and uncertainty going on in New Orleans, the team will need their leaders to help them forget the off field mess come kickoff day. Anyone who has seen a Saints huddle before a game knows Brees is the leader of this franchise and is the player his teammates will look to for the inspiration and drive they need to win games.

So, they were the five players I think will be under the blowtorch this year. I’d be interested to hear who you think deserves to be on the list. href="http://nfldownunder.com/tag/2012-draft" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with 2012 Draft">2012 draft in rebuild mode. They had cleared the decks by releasing their franchise quarterback Payton Manning and a list of older, high profile players leaving them with needs on both sides of the ball. The most glaring need was quarterback and in drafting Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the Colts look to have landed a player who can be the face of the franchise for the next decade. Replacing a legend like Manning will be no easy task, but hearing the plethora of positive scouting reports heaping praise on Luck, Colts fans have reason to be excited for the upcoming season.

Taking Andrew Luck with the first overall pick told us little of the strategy the Colts were going to employ for the draft. Luck picked himself. The players Indianapolis took in the later rounds spoke loud and clear, ‘Andrew Luck is now our guy and we’re going to give him what he needs to succeed.’ Of their 9 remaining draft picks Indianapolis drafted 7 offensive players including Luck’s favourite target at Stanford, tight end Coby Fleener.

Fleener provides Luck with a pure pass catching tight end that runs great routes and has good speed. He should put up respectable numbers this year and will create an interesting tandem with Colts third round selection Dwayne Allen.

Allen is a tight end out of Clemson who plays all aspects of the position well. He is not the receiving threat that Fleener is but he is solid in the passing game and is a much better blocker. The combination of Fleener and Allen has given Indianapolis a duel tight end threat similar to the system employed in New England. Indianapolis would be ecstatic if they can match New England’s production from these two players.

If Luck was excited with the last two picks, he would’ve been doing backflips when the Colts took Florida International wide receiver T.Y. Hilton off the board. Hilton is a dynamic returner but could also prove to be a dangerous weapon in the passing game with his elusiveness and speed.

Alabama defensive tackle Josh Chapman was the first defensive player taken by the Colts. Chapman has the size to fill the position and the Colts will be looking to sharpen his skills to make him a solid player. The defensive tackle area was a massive need and Indianapolis did well to address it here.

The Colts took Mississippi State running back Vick Ballard with their next draft pick. Indianapolis released long time starter Joseph Addai this offseason but I’m unsure if Ballard was drafted to be ‘the guy’ or simply to play back up to Delone Carter. Both backs will benefit from the improved aerial threat posed by the Colts but we will likely have to wait till opening day to find out the starter for the franchise.

The next four picks made by Indianapolis, Ohio wide receiver LaVon Brazill, Georgia offensive tackle Justin Anderson, Vanderbilt defensive end Tim Fugger and Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish look likely to play backup roles or may be cut from the final squad.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Every draft there is one pick that leaves you scratching your head asking ‘what were they thinking’. The Jaguars taking Cal punter Bryan Anger in the third round, was baffling to say the least. A punter is a luxury pick at the best of times. Coming off the season Jacksonville had last year, coupled with the fact they only had 6 draft picks to work with, a punter shouldn’t even come into consideration. Anger is obviously a skilful player and I realise the importance of good field position, but I believe the Jaguars could’ve landed a quality player who would’ve made a greater impact with this pick and still have been able to pick up Anger later in the draft.

Anger may have been a strange pick, but Justin Blackmon was exactly what the franchise needed. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert looked shaky at best last year and despite having a premiere running back in Maurice Jones-Drew in the backfield, he was desperately in need of a number one receiver. Blackmon gives Gabbert a big target and shores up a passing game that was terrible last year. There are concerns that Blackmon might not be a pure number one receiver, but there is little doubt he was the best receiving prospect in this draft.

The Jaguars took Clemson defensive end Andre Branch with their second round pick. Branch was the best of the pass rushing defensive ends remaining on the board and was a solid pick for Jacksonville. They realised they didn’t get enough pressure on the passer last year and Branch with his flexibility and closing speed has the makings of a solid pass rusher.

Jacksonville added to their defence in the fifth round by drafting Nevada linebacker Brandon Marshall. Marshall has some positives in terms of technique and positional play but looks like he will provide depth more than an immediate impact at the position and his playing time may be limited this season.

Florida State’s Mike Harris is another player that will have limited game time this season but provides much needed depth at the cornerback position. Harris looks to be a solid player and could be a contributor further down the road.

The Jaguars took Ashland defensive tackle Jeris Pendleton with their last selection in the Tennessee Titans

Many pundits were surprised when the Titans opted to draft Baylor wide receiver Kendall Wright in the first round rather than addressing their much more pressing need of defensive end. As much as they did ignore a pressing need, I have to say I like this pick. Wright is a solid receiving prospect with great acceleration. With Kenny Britt returning from a season ending injury and tight end Jared Cook showing flashes of what a dangerous receiving threat he can be, Tennessee now have the makings of a formidable passing attack.

The Titans second pick, line backer Zach Brown out of North Carolina, looms as a boom-or-bust prospect. There is no doubting Brown’s pure athletic ability. He has great speed and movement for a line backer and will be valuable in zone coverage. There are however questions regarding Brown’s football instincts and his ability to hold up against the run. This coupled with the fact Tennessee once again ignored their needs and went for a player they think has upside with this pick made this an interesting choice.

Tennessee added to their defensive line with their third pick of the draft by taking Michigan defensive tackle Mike Martin. Martin has great strength, a relentless motor and is a high character guy. He was a defensive leader in Michigan and he can be a solid player for the Titans for many seasons to come.

Losing Cortland Finnegan in free agency this offseason was a blow for the Titans. Finnegan’s play was sometimes inconsistent but he was a solid contributor to the defence nonetheless. Clemson corner back Coty Sensabaugh could be the long term answer for Finnegan if he makes the most of his physical gifts. He has exceptional recovery speed and with some experience under his belt could prove to be an exceptional man coverage corner, but he must be viewed as a project player for now.

It took until the fifth round for the Titans to address their most pressing need… sort of. Tennessee drafted SMU defensive end Taylor Thompson, but are expected to convert him into a tight end. Thompson has reportedly looked good in tight end workouts and has promise. This should be tempered with the fact that he has had little playing time at the position so will likely need time and coaching to become a contributor to the side. It will be interesting to see how this pick plays out for the Titans and his development will be interesting to watch.

The second last pick the Titans made could prove to be one of their best. Oklahoma State safety Markelle Martin is a solid tackler and shows good speed for his position. Look for Martin to make his presence felt this season.

Tennessee traded a 2013 sixth round pick to enter into the seventh round to draft Rice’s Scott Solomon. Yes he is a defensive end but the pick was a little late to provide the help they needed at the position.

Houston Texans

Houston lost their biggest defensive weapon Mario Williams in free agency this offseason. Though the Texans showed they could live without Williams last year when they lost him early in the season and still managed to make the playoffs, they were still in need of a defensive end that can rush the passer. They believe they have their man now after taking Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus with the 26th overall pick. Whitney’s speed combined with his size will make him an imposing figure on the line and bolsters an already impressive Texans defensive unit.

Wide Receiver was a position of concern for the Texans coming into the draft. Injuries sidelined star receiver Andre Johnson for the majority of the season and exposed the lack of depth the franchise had at the position. Receivers Jacoby Jones and Kevin Walter were inconsistent and failed to impress when given their opportunity. Ohio State wide out DeVier Posey was drafted in the third round and has the skill set to be a solid receiving option. I’m unsure if Posey will be the receiving weapon Houston was looking for as he does lack the intangibles of an elite number one receiver, but he should be able to contribute immediately to the team.

Taking two offensive linemen with their next two picks gave some much needed depth to the Houston front. Miami’s Brandon Brooks and Georgia’s Ben Jones are both solid linemen with good size that should become future starters.

Michigan State’s Keyshawn Martin added more depth to the wide receiver position. An added bonus for the Texans is that Martin is also useful in the return game. Houston hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in that department in recent seasons so Martin will provide an upgrade in that area.

Nebraska’s Jason Crick was added in the fourth round and will join the impressive list of Houston defensive linemen. What Crick lacks in skill he makes up for in work ethic. The Texans landed themselves a solid player with this pick.

With the departure of Neil Rackers in the offseason, the Texans needed a kicker. In Randy Bullock (Texas A & M) they drafted one of the most accurate collegiate kickers from last year.

Houston finalised their draft by taking offensive tackle Nick Mondek out of Purdue.

Overview

It’s close but I’m going to have to say my pick of the drafts was the Houston Texans. They addressed their major needs, didn’t reach for players and spread the additions across all areas of the team. If all their players return fit and healthy for this season look for them to have another impressive year.

The Colts had so many needs they were never going to be able to address them all but I feel they did a good job. Franchise quarterback Luck now has a plethora of weapons to work with which will make the transition to the NFL much easier. Indianapolis will need to address the defence in next years draft but they have taken the first step toward rebuilding.

This is definitely a ‘wait and see’ draft by the Titans. If Tennessee’s draft picks work out the way they hope, we could look back and view it as one of their best. If they don’t, their roster could be littered with busts. There are just too many unknowns in their selections to allow me to give a better review.

The Jaguars are the low mark for mine. They did well early on to get their number one receiver and improve their pass rush. I just can’t overlook taking a punter in the third round when you have limited picks to work with.

Top 5 Questionable Picks From The 2012 Draft

Opinion

2012 Draft

Bruce Irvin

Dontari Poe

Kirk Cousins

Quinton Coples

RG3

Whitney Mercilus
<guid

Their decisions are based on team needs, desires, luxuries, schemes, personal philosophy, character, ticket sales and various other factors. No matter how intricate we like to think our knowledge of the league is, we as fans simply can’t comprehend the thought process that is involved.

If there is one constant about the NFL it’s that it will never cease to amaze. This is why the NFL draft seems to be just as celebrated an event in the football calendar as the Super Bowl.

In each draft class there are bona fide superstars as well as those with question marks surrounding them. But we have often seen these ‘superstars’ fizzle out within three years (Jamarcus Russell) while the questionable draftees (Tim Tebow) become cultural phenomenons.

In the immortal words of former Indianapolis head coach Jim Mora, “you think you know, but you just dont know, and you never will.”

And so I attempt to make some sense of several questionable picks in the With the 11th pick, in the NFL Draft, The Dontari Poe is.

He is a physical specimen with a freakish combination of size, strength and agility who draws favourable comparisons to Ravens All-Pro Haloti Ngata.

But he is a physical beast who suffered from lack of production playing for Memphis in the Conference USA, a second-tier college football conference.

Generally, a defensive player taken this highly in the draft has earned their position as they were dominant against a high level of college competition (just look at Ndamukong Suh’s game against Texas. Seriously, YouTube it. I’ll wait). This alone is enough to be skeptical of the pick.

Poe skyrocketed to the upper echelon of the draft based purely off his combine performance, but as the old adage goes “the game isnt played in shorts” and as a result there are some questionable traits that shadow this pick.

Firstly, the last draftee that help his draft stock so much from a Combine performance? Former 6th overall pick Vernon Gholston.

Secondly, by the time the Chiefs were on the clock every defensive tackle was still available. They didnt have to take Poe due to lack of any other option and as a result passed on Mississippi State’s Fletcher Cox and LSU’s Michael Brockers, both had more productive college careers against a higher level of competition and both were taken within three picks of Dontari Poe.

Finally, the state of Missouri is known as the “Show Me” state, so until the Kansas City front office shows me they are adequate talent evaluators of defensive lineman the only confidence I have in them are the examples of former first round picks Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson (who have a combined six sacks since entering the league).

That’s to say, my confidence is not high.

Bruce Irvin is a defensive end out of West Virginia. The fact that you have to be told who he is should be the first warning.

<a

You just have to wonder if the 15th overall pick is an adequate draft value for a player who is essentially a situational pass rusher.

Irvin as a college player compares to Penn State product Aaron Maybin who was drafted 11th overall to the Bills in the 2009 draft.

Both are undersized at the position and specialise in rushing the passer but unfortunately for Irvin, the Aaron Maybin experiment didn’t work out in Buffalo and now with the Jets, Maybin has only six sacks to his name in three years.

On top of the physical side of things, Irvin has had a slew of off-field discretions ranging from dropping out of high school, de-committing to college programs as well as an arrest for a robbery adding to the list of questionable traits surrounding him as a player and person.

Only time will tell as to whether he will be a success in the NFL, but it is noted that amongs players with chequered pasts, rarely do their issues remain dormant especially after an influx of first round money.

Eyebrows were raised when Coples was taken over other elite pass-rushing talent in the draft.

Looking from the outside it is a match made in heaven, but there are some real queries as to how this relationship is going to work.

Coming out of North Carolina, Quinton Coples was spoken of as the prototype 4-3 defensive end of the draft.

He was linked to Carolina, Jacksonville and Seattle, all who needed a pass rusher and all who run a 4-3 scheme.

But Coples slipped down the draft and the ultra-aggressive defensive style of the New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan snapped him up to play a role in their 3-4 scheme which is still shrouded in mystery.

At 6’6 and 285lbs Coples is vastly more sizable than the prototypical 3-4 outside rusher. While he has a natural knack for getting to the quarterback, his production could be altered greatly if forced to play the rush from a standing position rather than hand in dirt.

What is more important about this pick is the effect it will have on the already dysfunctional New York Jets locker room.

Last season turned into a soap opera for the organisation as the receiving corps went to war with the offensive line, quarterback Mark Sanchez was in the firing line and appointed captain Santonio Holmes was benched in the last game of the year for quitting on his team.

One main concern about Coples is that of his character, triggering fears that he won’t give his all once he makes first round money.

This is understandable as on various occasions in his last season at North Carolina he was accused of “playing not to get hurt”, as he knew he would be declaring for the NFL draft shortly after the season.

Combine these personality and effort issues with his NCAA investigations regarding violations last season and this could be a terrible concoction for a locker room desperate to regain the team unity it once had.

Houston Texans reached their first playoff appearance in franchise history last season.

They achieved this by riding running back tandem Arian Foster and Ben Tate into the ground behind a physically dominant and mauling offensive line.

This had to be the case due to nagging injuries to Andre Johnson who was never at 100% as well as season ending injuries to both quarterback Matt Schaub, the effectiveness of the running game and the free agent loss of RT Eric Winston it would seem the best use of Houston’s first round pick would have been steadying the right side of the offensive line, allowing the running game to dominate for the third straight year.

One more thing to take into account – no longer will the Texans be receiving maximum gain for minimum expenditure.

After two years of All-Pro production on an undrafted free agent salary, the Texans signed running back Arian Foster to deal for five years worth a reported $43.5 million. Clearly staying true to the run game is critical both on the field as well as financially.

The Mercilus pick is questionable for a few reasons.

This pick seems like a knee-jerk reaction to Houston losing defensive end (and former first overall pick) Mario Williams. But the Texans had the number two ranked defence in the league last season after playing the majority of the year without him due to a torn pectoral muscle, so is it really such a priority to replace him?

Mercilus would be out of position as either an undersized 3-4 end or an oversized 3-4 linebacker and as a result would be a victim of a heavy learning curve. This is not great news for a team with its best chance to win the division now that Peyton Manning is out of the picture.

Houston already have two tremendous young book ends at outside linebacker with Connor Barwin and Brooks Reed as well as a blitzing middle linebacker in Brian Cushing. More often than not, when these two teams compete, you end up with a great battle and I see this year being no different. Both teams went in opposite directions in the draft, with the Giants spending 5/7 picks on offence, and the Cowboys 5/7 on defence (including a potential immediate game changer in CB When: Week 15, Sunday December 16, 5:00 AM AEDT, Fox

These teams both have a huge amount of potential. One of the most injury riddled teams from last year, the Rams will have bunch of starters returning to the game, and with the addition of WRs Brian Quick and Chris Givens, 3rd year QB Sam Bradford will have some more weapons, and command an improved offence. Vikings second year QB Christian Ponder also showed lots of promise last year, and will have the support of All-Pro RB Adrian Peterson, who is coming back from injury.

Both of these teams have weak defences, and while improvements were made through the draft, I don’t see either of them being particularly stellar, even by week 15. As such, both offences will have room for error, and the product should be a very close game.
When: Week 9, Sunday November 4, 4:00 AM AEDT, Fox

The battle of the mobile quarterbacks: Robert Griffin III. These Quarterbacks are similar in so many ways; both have strong arms, the ability to make all the throws, and can get out of the pocket and make plays with their legs. The Redskins have improved their offence, going crazy in free agency trying to add WR threats for RG3, while the Panthers took a more balanced approach to the off season, filling holes on both sides of the ball, including what should be an immediate impact player in ILB Luke Kuechly.

Regardless of Kuechly, defence remains a large question mark for both these teams, and Defensive game planning for the two QBs will be a nightmare. Look for them to run up quite a high score, in a back and forth game.

Final Thoughts

An honourable mention has to be given to every game in Week 17. The divisional showdowns that often can decide the winners of the division include some of the most intense and thrilling games of the season. It’s hard to judge which teams will be challenging for their division, but you know that if it comes down to a tie breaker, they will give everything they have to get the win.

I should also throw a word to the AFC and NFC Championship game rematches. Patriots at Ravens (week 3), and Giants at 49ers (week 7) sat right outside my top 5, and are definitely games to keep an eye on, as they should produce an excellent contest.

Which games are you most looking to this season?
