Some of you might not be aware that the Madden 11 demo was released late last month. Because I love the run I have been playing exclusively as the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS but the demo also allows you to play as the Colts, giving you the chance to have an AFC Championship rematch.
So whats improved? Well there is a new locomotion control system that allows you to control the body of the player with the right stick, leaning into or away from the tackle, side step or spin. All of this is now done with the right stick much like other EA sports and it’s a welcome move that feels much more natural.
It seems that run blocking is improved somewhat as well. With Shonn Green I was breaking off some great runs, especially in between the tackles and my linesmen actually manged to hold their blocks when I hit the gap. While occasionally during a pitch play my TE might completely run past the blitzing safety to block some far off cornerback this was rare and in general it seems both run and pass blocking are much improved. Although this might be just because the Jets’ OL is magical.
There is a new ‘Gameplan’ system where the computer chooses the plays each down from a list you set in your gameplan. You can organise how often certain plays should be called and it really as EA have stated speeds up the gameplay. While its kind of nice for newbies thankfully the old method of selecting your plays is still there.
Finally the greatest improvement is the addition of new play-by-play caller Gus Johnson. If you don’t know who he is check this and this out. He’s wonderfully energetic and really adds to the excitement of the game. Now if only I could find a way to switch Chris Collinsworth’s comments off.
Hopefully when the game comes out on the 12th of August we might see even more improvements over what was last year, frankly, a disappointment. Also I’ll challenge Andy at some point and humiliate his precious Cowboys with my glorious Redskins. HAIL!
