Fruitless Division Predictions #2: AFC East

Baltimore Ravens v New England Patriots - Wild Card Round
Here we are again for some pointless and highly dubious claims regarding a division’s final standings by the end of the regular season. This week: AFC East.
Division Winners: New England Patriots, 11 – 5. The Pats in my eyes made some solid draft decisions moving up and down the board and ending up with 3 good 2nd round picks including the promising TE Rob Gronkowski and LB Brandon Spikes. Although lets face it Brady is in no way lacking in targets for the pass a good TE will certainly assist an already dangerous pass attack. However despite the Patriots biggest flaw being their lack of talent running the ball they failed to grab any of the talented tailbacks available in the later rounds. Despite this I fully expect the Patriots to win their division. Boring I know but Bill Belichick scares me.

Mark Sanchez: 2009 Draft's most irrelevant 1st round pick? Ok that is a little harsh.

Division Runners Up: New York J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS, 9-7. While for many the Jets are the favourite for this division I cant shake the feeling that they perhaps shook things up a little too much by not retaining Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. While they are helping Greene run the ball with veteran Ladanian Tomlinson I feel they have given away too much. The inclusion of Santonio Holmes was a nice pickup in the off-season but I don’t expect the pass used any more in 2010 than it was 2009. Defence again will need to step up if they want to make the playoffs for a second year and that also means the head office needs to hurry up and pay da man. Who else is looking forward to seeing on Hard Knocks?

Then: Miami Dolphins, 8-8. The Dolphins could easily knock the Jets down with the off-season trade for and some solid but not outstanding picks in the draft. Expect Ronnie Brown to perform and if not the incredible Ricky Williams saga to continue. They also grabbed Karlos Dansby from free agency to improve their LB corp and hopefully fill the void left by Jason Taylor. If performs as well as his QB seems to think they could be contenders, also getting rid of Ted Ginn was a good idea. Despite this I feel the Dolphins will have a season with just as many negatives as positives and unless they have some stellar games against their rivals they should stay .500.

Fred Jackson: A good running back. One of the few good Bills players. Also seemingly replaced in the 2010 draft. Why?

Finally: Buffalo Bills, 3-13. Honestly, I feel 3 wins is being generous. The Bills didn’t address their OL issues until late in the draft and didn’t even try and pick a new QB. While is an awesome talent the Bills were already not too bad RB wise with Fred Jackson sure to take the number 1 spot on the depth chart. While Jarius Byrd performed supremely well in his rookie year in 2009 and 4rd round draft pick WR Marcus Easley could surprise there’s just not enough there to make the Buffalo in any way dangerous on either side of the ball.

This division will be a fun one to watch this season as honestly the Jets are so exiting and charged anything could happen. While I would like to see the Dolphins or even the Bills step up in some way I feel like the 2010 NFC East is going to be remarkably similar to 2009.
